Burdekin ABCD Water Quality Framework
The ABCD Framework for Water Quality is a guide for horticulture and sugar growers in the Burdekin-Bowen region to adopt improved farming practices under the Australian Government’s Reef Rescue program. The frameworks have been designed to provide growers with guidance when establishing best management practices concerning the quality of water leaving their farms and entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.
The frameworks broadly categorise and describe improved farming practices according to their water quality outcomes. The identification and validation of these better management practice guidelines were developed through a collaborative process that involved a comprehensive science and grower focus consultation.
The ABCD frameworks provide a definition and a scale of improvement from ‘degrading’ to ‘cutting edge’ practices and are based on criteria relating to:
• Soil health;
• Nutrient management;
• Pesticide management;
• Water and irrigation management; and
• Planning and recording.
