Australia is a dry continent, yet it is home to more than 230 species of freshwater fishes. Nearly one-third of these species are found in the Burdekin Dry Tropics natural resource management region with some living only in a single river system

Much of the information about fish species and their distribution in the Burdekin Dry Tropics NRM region is based on the work of Dr Brad Pusey (Griffith University). The Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research (ACTFR) provided access to their Northern Australian Freshwater Fish (NAFF) database which contains the most current fish survey data for tropical Australia. Dr Allan Webb (ACTFR) provided information on the exotic fish species recorded from the immediate Townsville region. Thanks to Alf Hogan from Fisheries Queensland for providing data on species distribution. Thanks also to Bernard Yau and efishalbum for their image of the Threadfin silver biddy.
