Mining is an important industry within the region and is the largest employer within four local government areas of the upper Burdekin catchment (Belyando, Charters Towers, Dalrymple, Nebo). Mining has the largest GVP ~$776m of any single industry within the Northern Statistical Division (Productivity Commission 2003). The main mineral resources mined within the region include gold, silver, copper and zinc. Major coal reserves of the Bowen basin also extend into the region and coal is mined at Collinsville and Newlands.
Sand and gravel extraction and rock quarrying are also regionally important industries particularly in the coastal part of the region where sand and gravel supplies are essential to the building industry and concrete manufacture including building blocks, drainage pipes and paving blocks. There is also a large mineral processing industry within the region with a 100% of the base metals processed in the GBR catchment processed in Townsville (Productivity Commission 2003).
more extensive impacts. In contrast to other natural resource based industries, mining is characterised economically by high leakage of gross operating surplus out of the region and a low employment ratio (in relation to turnover) (Greiner et al. 2003).
