Catchment: Broken River
The wetland has been created by damming a valley of the Broken River. It was completed in 1969. The catchment is principally that of the Broken River and its upper tributaries, together with a number of minor streams which drain out of the hills with very high relief on both the eastern and western sides of the site. 21 degrees 10' 08" S, 148 degrees 24' 06" E; the site extends c. 7 km in a northwest-southeast direction and is up to 3.5 km wide, with its centre c. 80 km west of Mackay.
A permanent, stable, deep waterbody with extensive shallow margins which provides year round habitat and drought refuge for waterfowl, waterbirds and fauna using riverine habits.
