Get started

Welcome to Google Maps (training) for Community Groups!
This training component is designed for community groups who want to start working with mapping to cover basics of Google Maps functionalities and tools.


   

Open Google Account

  • To make maps using Google Maps, you need a Google account. Sign up for free Google Australia.



   

Access Google Maps

  • Open Google Maps page in your browser, and SIGN IN if you have not.

Create Map

  • Click My Places > CREATE MAP

  • Name your map in Title, add Description if you need and select Unlisted not to make it public yet. Then, Click Save.

Locate where to map

  • Zoom in the location you want to map by searching a location on a search bar.

  • Pan the screen if you need by using a hand tool that you can find on the left top corner.
  • Also adjust scale by using scale bar on the left side, or using wheel on your mouse.
  • Change background to Satellite if you need.

Add Placemark

  • You can add placemark points by using Add a placemark tool on the left top corner.
  • Click on the tool, then click on the location that you want to place your point.

  • Give Title and Description, and change icon if you want.

Draw Line

  • You can add lines by using Draw a line and Draw a line along roads tool on the left top corner.

  • Click on the tool, then click at the start point of where you want your line feature to start.
  • Keep clicking points along where you draw your line.
  • You will notice the accumlative distance is shown as you draw.
  • Click on the last point that you drew if you want to finish.
  • Give Title and Description, and change icon if you want.

Draw Shape

  • You can add lines by using Draw a shape tool on the left top corner.

  • Click on the tool, then click around the perimeter of your featuer.
  • Double click when you get close to the fiest point you draw.
  • Give Title and Description, and change icon if you want.

Import KML

  • You can also import an existing KML file.

Export KML to share

  • To share Google Maps you created, there are two ways. One of those is to destribute KML.
