Terminalia catappa

Family : Combretaceae

There are several native species of Terminalia in this region, many of these can be found in the coastal areas. The Sea Almond is a large tree with layered branches. The leaves are large and rounded with a blunt tip, clustered at the end of the branches, making them look whorled. They have a stiff leathery feel with a glossy shine. Foliage often turns to orange or red before they fall from the tree.

Flowers are small and greenish white and produce an unusual smell. These are seen on stalks. Fruits are purple when ripe and about 5cm long. They are broadly oval in shape, tough and fibrous, with a woody interior.

Inside the pod is a single seed that tastes like almonds. Sea Almond grows well on exposed coastal areas and will grow well in larger garden areas. These can be seen along the Strand.


Traditional Owner Values

Manbarra - Ripe Sea Almond fruit can be eaten, along with the seed. The seed needs to be smashed and left to dry out before it is eaten like a peanut.
